Your rights if arrested?

Crimes in New York are classified. There are basically felonies, misdemeanors and violations. Each requires an attorney’s opinion on whether guilt can be proven and what
the punishment is.

The idea is to strike a bargain with the District Attorney (DA).

If you are convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor, there can be up to one year in jail. Felonies can involve years and years in jail.

DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) is a Class A Misdemeanor. A lawyer can:

  1. Get it reduced to a violation
  2. Help you get a temporary license
  3. Get other traffic tickets such as speeding dismissed
  4. Make sure you don’t have to put in on a job application that seeks crime
